TAY NINH — Southern Tay Ninh Province People's Court yesterday sentenced a woman to five years in prison and handed out an additional penalty of VND5 million (US$263) for involvement in a human trafficking ring.

HA NOI — Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga yesterday rejected the US Department of State's comments on the human trafficking situation in the country, saying they were politically motivated.

DA NANG — Human trafficking in Viet Nam is on the rise with organised gangs of traffickers using more complicated tricks to evade authorities, a new report commissioned by the deputy minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Trong Dam has found.

The 12th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice provided participants with a unique opportunity to explore on the one hand - the links between organized crime, trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants and how the knowledge of these links should in turn shape a more effective criminal justice response to trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants; and on the other hand - how to prevent violence against migrants, migrant workers and their families, and provide an appropriate criminal justice response to this violence.

Human trafficking and migrant smuggling are two of the most serious forms of transnational organized crime. It is estimated that in South Asia alone some 150,000 persons are trafficked every year. Although there are no similar estimates for migrant smuggling, countries in the region consider it an issue of increasing concern either as source, transit or destination country.

- Để triển khai các hoạt động từ Dự án “Phòng chống buôn bán người ở Việt Nam” do Tổ chức Di cư Quốc tế (IOM) hỗ trợ, Cục Trợ giúp pháp lý (TGPL) đã có hướng dẫn các Trung tâm TGPL thực hiện các hoạt động hỗ trợ một cách có hiệu quả. Trong đó, đáng chú ý là việc thành lập Nhóm hỗ trợ pháp lý đa ngành.

At its fourth session, held in Vienna from 8 to 17 October 2008, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime adopted decision 4/4. In that decision, the Conference decided to establish an open-ended interim working group to advise and assist the Conference in the implementation of its mandate with regard to the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. It also decided that the working group should perform the following functions:

In simple terms, community policing builds on the notion that community interaction and support can help in controlling crime. Community policing requires partnering with the police and citizens and rests on the belief that law-abiding members of the community deserve participation in police processes. It uses different strategies such as foot patrol and problem solving at the neighborhood level. It has been practiced in India for a long time, for example during festivals the police engages civil society organizations, individual volunteers for crowd control and other activities like helping in communication and tracking missing people.
